Driving I10

After some investigation it was determined that driving was the simplest and most cost effective way to get from San Antonio TX to Carlsbad NM. So we set out after breakfast to drive the I10. We set the iphone onto the French Open radio coverage to hear the women's tennis final broadcast (and alas witnessed the impending loss). We also listened to Jules Verne's Around the World in 80 Days which made the drive kind of strange listening to adventures with elephants in India whilst staring at the desert landscape of western Texas.

We stopped for lunch at an official rest stop. They are fairly high tech here with free wifi and all the other usual amenities. It was 114 degrees when we stopped so we ate our Whole Foods take-out fairly quickly and then stood under a sprinkler before continuing. Despite the heat the desert was alive with wildlife and we saw many different birds and insects.

We drove at 80mph for most of the drive. We missed the Subaru however. The Jeep Grand Cherokee that we had rented is just not a great car to drive. The kids sat comfortably in their own car seats with their bags of toys and enjoyed the ride. Neither of them complained so I guess we had conditioned them with the DisneyWorld trip.

After 7 hours of driving we reached Carlsbad. Find out more tomorrow...
